Unearthly (Unearthly #1) by Cynthia Hand

Release Date: January 4th 2011
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Page Count: Hardcover, 435 pages
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny? - Good Reads

I'm going to straight out say I LOVE THIS BOOK AND I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE. COME OUT QUICKER.

I absolutely adored this book. And I really REALLY did not expect some of the turns this book took. I love that. I love being surprised.

Clara is a sweetheart. She's a wonderful heroine. I really loved the fact that despite being an angel who is naturally better at everything she does, she still is legitimately insecure and it feels realistic. I obviously could relate to her because I am amazing at everything I do as well and sometimes it's difficult because I know it's not fair to others because nobody stands a chance against me. Ha ha! Jokes aside, she did really seem like an average teenager and she was easy to relate to.

The supporting cast is very intriguing. There are a lot of little plots going on with them, but nothing that is overwhelming to keep up with. I myself still have a lot of questions I'm dying to know the answer to. Like, why is Clara's Mom so secretive? There is obviously a purpose and I need to know what it is five minutes ago. Clara's friend Angela also interests me, because I feel there is much more about her than meets the eye. And maybe I'm totally off here, but I think Angela's mother might be a little shady.

There is a sweet romance in the book and I loved it. It didn't come out of nowhere and it felt real. None of that, "oh gosh, I know we just met, but I think we're soulmates" stuff. Not that I mind that, but somehow this one just touched my heart in that perfect way and I think it had to do with the progression.

This is definitely a book I plan on buying. You should read it. As soon as possible!

  1. Oh my gosh, I absolutely ADORE this book too! I read it from the library and I definitely had to go out to the bookstore to buy it when I was done -- it was that good! :)

I totally agree! Not that I'm not a fan of cute soul mate stuff (because I am), but I really like the realistic feel to the romance in Unearthly.

    Awesome review, Liza!

  2. It was so much better than I was expecting it to be! I'm reading Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready now and it's really interesting! :) Thanks for your comment, Mimi!
