The astonishing final novel in Richelle Mead's epic series!
Murder. Love. Jealousy. And the ultimate sacrifice. Now, with Rose on trial for her life and Lissa first in line for the Royal Throne, nothing will ever be the same between them. - Good Reads

I am very sad this series is over! I had my issues with the first book and I honestly didn't care much for Rose at first, but throughout the series she grew on me. This final installment was action-packed and kept me on the edge of my seat. I shouted obscenities, I laughed, I even got teary a few times. And there were a lot of surprises.

It's funny because I was sure I knew whodoneit and I was right the first time, but I was quickly led off the trail twice and ended up being surprised at the end. I loved the Lissa storyline. She really showed tremendous growth throughout the series and I was very proud of the person she became in this book.

I wasn't as happy with Rose in this book though and here is why...

*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The Rose and Adrian storyline was a little infuriating. I didn't actually ever root for them as a couple, but... There was one scene in particular where my heart just dropped to the floor. I just couldn't believe how it ended up ending between them.  Rose basically just used him. From the get-go. And she never gave him any kind of respect whatsoever. He gave a lot to her and she basically just shit all over his feelings. Yes, he gave her money freely and perhaps he should have realized long ago she wasn't worth the trouble, but Rose, where is your heart?? Oh, it's busy pining over Dimitri you say? Then why in the hell are you playing with Adrian? I desperately hope Adrian gets a good chance at a happy ending in Bloodlines. He deserves it after all he's been through.
This quote... this did it for me: Page 488: Regardless, I couldn’t lead him on after sleeping with Dimitri. It hadn’t been murder, no, but it had certainly dishonourable. Yet...I couldn’t say any of that to Adrian now, I realized. I couldn’t break up with him in a dream. That was almost as bad as a text breakup. Besides, I had a feeling that...well, I’d probably need his help. So much for honor. Soon, I swore. Soon I’ll tell him.
*SPOILERS OVER*

Overall, I still loved this book and it had it's redeeming qualities, enough for me to still give it a 5. I'm very excited to start Bloodlines now and see more of Sydney and Adrian!

  1. Oh that quote made my blood boil. I really do hate Rose because of the whole Adrian thing. I never thought they should be together but he desverved to be treated like a person. I wasn't too keen in the first book but she really grew on me then I was just let down. I did enjoy the series but Rose and I have issues haha

    Great review! :-)

  2. I think the only reason the Rose-Adrian thing didn't drive me crazy was because, even though I didn't like the way she treated him...it was total Rose. She's a flawed character, and her major flaw is that she has tunnel vision for the people she cares most about. Unfortunately, that never really included Adrian. Did she use him? Yes. Did she hurt him? Yes. Do I like that? No. BUT, because she had reasons for her actions, I was able to handle it.

    P.S. I think you'll really enjoy Bloodlines! :)

  3. I was really sad when I finished this one as well and realized the series was over, but I'm so glad we at least get a spinoff in the same world:) Rose really grew on me as well and I thought matured quite a bit over the course of the books. The Adrian scenario was heartbreaking, but while it would have been nice for it to be wrapped up all pretty and with no one's feelings hurt, I thought it was more realistic the way it happened. Though I do agree that she used him and that was hard to read since I'm a fan of his:)

  4. @Jennifer Oh, me too! Exactly... He really didn't deserve the way he was treated. Thanks!

@BJ You're totally and completely right! I think that is why it didn't ruin the book for me. I don't hate Rose for it and I'm really glad she got her happy ending, but I was disappointed in her actions. I haven't been in exactly the same situation, but I'm not perfect and I broke a boys heart once upon a time and it still makes me feel bad because how I handled the whole situation wasn't really good. At all. Funnily enough I told the guy that I couldn't be with him, because I couldn't ever really have a long term relationship with someone who wasn't Russian... ha ha ha... (:

@Jenny I know! I am really glad for the spinoff series! :) I agree with you, she really did. It was, but like I said to BJ, it didn't make me hate her - and I agree with you as well. In real life a lot of these things never end perfect and it was a realistic reaction. We're only human and we all fall short of being perfect. Well, Rose is actually a dhampir, but same principle. ;D
